Music @ La Mesa
My name is Jennifer Kremer and I have been teaching music at La Mesa since 2016. My husband retired from the Navy in 2017 so I have a special place in my heart for the many military children who come to our school community. I divide my teaching time in the district between La Mesa and Foothill Elementary so I am normally on campus on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It is my goal to help each child explore and define their own music preferences as they learn about the many types of music and performing opportunities there are in the world.
All students from TK through 5th grade have a general music class once a week.
In this class students receive standards based instruction on:
- Basic music theory (reading music)
- Music performance (singing- including solfege and age appropriate songs, playing accompaniments on percussion type classroom instruments and sometimes movement and basic dance)
- Music appreciation and history (listening to pieces of music from a wide variety of time periods and cultures.)
We are very fortunate to use a wonderful online music curriculum called Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music.
Students in 3rd grade will be provided with a recorders which we will play in class throughout the year. We begin recorders usually around November in order to prepare students for the possibility of playing an orchestral or band instrument when they are older.
Additionally, students in 4th and 5th grade are given the option of taking a second music class each week to begin studying an instrument in preparation for middle and high school music electives. Students can choose to begin playing the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone.
Students will be given the opportunity to perform in a Winter Concert each December and a Spring Concert in May.
