MPUSD Honors Black History Month | February 2026

Each February, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District joins schools and communities across the nation in recognizing Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and enduring impact of African Americans on the history, culture, and progress of the United States.

In February 2026, the MPUSD Board of Education formally adopted a resolution proclaiming February 2026 as Black History Month, reaffirming the district’s commitment to honoring the past while shaping a more inclusive and informed future for all students.

Black History Month traces its origins to 1915, when historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History to research, document, and share the stories and accomplishments of Black Americans. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially designated February as Black History Month, urging the nation to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.”

This year’s national theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” highlights the transformative and enduring influence of African American artists, musicians, writers, dancers, actors, filmmakers, designers, and culture bearers whose creativity has shaped global culture and expanded the American artistic landscape.

From spirituals, blues, jazz, and hip-hop to literature, visual art, dance, fashion, theater, and film, African American artistic expression has long served as a powerful force for storytelling, cultural identity, resistance, resilience, and social change. These creative contributions continue to inspire generations, challenge perspectives, and connect communities.

At MPUSD, Black History Month is an opportunity to deepen learning, reflection, and celebration across classrooms and school communities. Guided by the district’s 2025–2026 theme, “Honoring the Past. Shaping the Future.”, MPUSD is committed to ensuring students learn about, celebrate, and uplift the rich history, excellence, and leadership of African Americans, not only during February, but throughout the entire year.

“Black History Month reminds us that understanding our shared history strengthens our collective future,” said Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh. “By elevating Black voices, stories, and artistic contributions, we help students see themselves reflected in our curriculum and better understand the world around them.”

Throughout the month, MPUSD schools will engage students in age-appropriate lessons, activities, and discussions that highlight African American history, culture, and artistic achievement. These learning experiences support the district’s ongoing commitment to equity, representation, and creating learning environments where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired.

MPUSD invites students, staff, families, and community members to join in recognizing and celebrating Black History Month honoring the profound cultural, historical, and artistic contributions of African Americans, past, present, and future.
